India continues to ramp up interest in ESS technology

India signalled its growing interest in energy storage systems during a week when its prime minister visited Tesla and a firm unveiled a new lead-acid battery.
During a tour of the US firm’s automotive campus, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi showed interest in Tesla’s Powerwall, especially for India’s remote rural areas.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs said the main takeaway was the technology behind long-term storage batteries, and Modi had been ‘very keen’ to see how India could use the battery technology to ‘leapfrog development in India’, claimed the website.
Tesla began shipping its 7kWh Powerwalls to pilot customers in North America, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Australia this week.
Meanwhile Relicell has launched a proprietary gel-based maintenance-free battery, designed for renewable energy storage, especially for home use in India’s punishing weather conditions.
Relicell is the battery brand of Greenvision Technologies, an energy storage solutions firm headquartered in Bangalore, India.
The batteries use a lead-calcium-tin-silver alloy, a synthetic separator with phosphoric acid added to the electrolyte to improve life cycle.
The batteries are available in 12V, 35 Ah to 12V and 200 Ah options and come in three variants: Solar Gel for solar applications, Ultra Gel for home inverters and deep cycle UPS applications.
Founder and Managing Director of Greenvision Technologies Biju Bruno said: "The largest adoption of these batteries is likely to be in home inverters and solar energy storage devices, while batteries used to store solar energy will be able to operate under very hot conditions and even in a state of partial charge."
Back in August ACME Cleantech Solutions launched the first power back-up storage solution in India. The lithium-ion-based EcoGrid Energy Storage System was designed for homes and small commercial units.
At the start of the year, US energy storage system developer SunEdison moved into the Indian market when it bought 1,000 Imergy Power Systems ESP 30 systems.


SunEdison bought the vanadium flow battery technology to build microgrids to store solar energy in rural India. SunEdison aims to develop 5,000 microgrids by 2020 to store solar energy for 20 million people, with the first 1,000 to be developed within three years.

Graphene Battery

Graphene’s huge specific surface area enables it to carry more li-ions and get/loss li-ions more quickly, therefore provides the essential physical foundation for battery to have bigger capacity and quicker charge/discharge speed.
   Battery with graphene as negative electrode has very good charge/discharge rate but very bad cycle life. Researchers are always trying to find an appropriate negative electrode material so as to combine advantages such as fast charging/discharging, long cycle life, high energy density and low cost together.

    Recently, Spain’s El Mundo has reported that Spain’s university has developed a graphene battery which has combined all the above advantages together. It will be first tested in a German’s automotive enterprise.
    On condition that the report is true, this battery will be quite promising. If the recharging time is as short as refueling time, then the charging stations could take the place of gas stations, and electric vehicles could take the place of fuel vehicles.

Flow Battery

 Flow battery belongs to ordinary chemical battery. Its utilization rate of active materials is improved through storing positive electrolyte and negative electrolyte separately.
      Due to the limit of materials and the concentration of the electrolyte, the flow battery didn’t achieve high energy density in past years. It can be applied in energy storage power stations, but not available on vehicles.
     Recently, Dr. Yet-Ming Chiang, scientist of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has invented a semi-solid lithium flow battery. He has made innovations on material and electrolyte concentration, which enables the battery to reach applicable level on energy density and power density. This battery is still in the laboratory stage.
    NanoFlowcell AG has launched an automobile with flow battery, which seems have reached very high energy density in accordance with its technical index. However, its facticity remains to be verified.
Flow Battery    Compared with previous hydrogen fuel battery and metal fuel battery, flow battery is more feasible. Once the laboratory technology enters into mass production period, it will change the electric vehicle industry dramatically. With flow battery, electric vehicle could run further, become cheaper, and charge faster (charge through power grid or replace electrolyte).

Aluminum-Air Battery

 Aluminum-air battery is also a kind of fuel battery. The “charging mode” of aluminum-air battery is replacing aluminum materials. It is similar to the Zinc-air battery used in hearing aids.
    Aluminum-air battery, a kind of metal fuel battery with high energy density and low power density, can be widely applied in facilities with low power. The only way to apply it on electric vehicle is to use it cooperatively with lithium battery.

    In view of its active chemical property, it is difficult to ensure its security and stability. Therefore, it is still in experimental stage.
    In addition, aluminum-air battery is also confronted with the problem of industrial chain. Both zinc-air battery and aluminum-air battery follow the following circulation:
    1. Metal manufacturer prepare metal through electrolyzing metallic oxide;
    2. Transferring metal to electrical changing station;
    3. Replacing metallic oxide in electric vehicle with metal (metal becomes metallic oxide after discharging);
    4. Metal manufacturer recycle metallic oxide for reutilization.
   In this process, a complete industrial chain is needed, from manufacturing, transportation, replacement, to recycling. Is it possible to build electrical changing stations all around the country?

   As a result, even aluminum-air battery enters mass production period, it can only be applied to vehicles with fixed electrical changing stations, such as city buses and taxis. Just like hydrogen fuel battery, it’s really difficult to achieve overall popularization.

Hydrogen Fuel Battery

  In previous article, we have discussed the technical requirements for electric vehicle batteries and have briefly introduced the basic characteristics of Li-ion batteries and lead acid batteries. Start from this article, we will introduce several advanced batteries for you one by one. In this article, we focus on hydrogen fuel battery.
    Fuel battery is usually nonrechargeable. As a kind of fuel battery, the “charging mode” of hydrogen fuel battery is actually hydrogen filling.
   The advantage of hydrogen fuel battery is 0 pollutant emission. Hydrogen generates electricity, motor drives vehicle. We change gas stations into hydrogen refueling stations and everything seems to be Ok.
   However, the entire process is not as simple as what you see. One problem we need to consider is the manufacture, transportation, and storage of hydrogen. Gaseous hydrogen needs to be stored in high pressure gasholder while liquid hydrogen needs to be maintained at very low temperature which costs excessive consumption of electric energy. It is far more troubling than fuel oil.
Hydrogen Fuel Battery
    Manufacturing of hydrogen is relatively simple. But if you want to transport hydrogen to hydrogen refueling station, special pipelines are needed. Considering the hydrogen embrittlement, the transportation, storage, and refilling of hydrogen demand facilities with high security.

     For fuel oil and natural gas, we have existing infrastructures to utilize; for lithium battery, we have existing power grid to utilize; while for hydrogen fuel battery, we have nothing. If we plan to manufacture vehicles with hydrogen fuel batteries, we need to build an entire system from hydrogen manufacture, to transportation and storage first. It is really a costly project.

Recently, with the promotion of Tesla, more and more new-type batteries for new energy vehicles begin to enter the public consciousness: from hydrogen fuel battery, aluminum battery, to flow battery, grapheme battery, aluminum ion battery, ... It seems that Li-ion battery has been out of date. What on earth is the truth of electric vehicle batteries?
Which Battery is Best for New Energy Vehicle?
    Now, let’s uncover the truth of electric vehicle batteries.
    Battery is the core problem which limits the development of electric vehicle. For electric vehicles, ideal battery must possess following characteristics:
   1. Enough energy density (has enough capacity at per unit volume and per unit weight), so that the vehicle could run further;
    2. Enough power density (could generate enough power at per unit volume and per unit weight), so that the vehicle could speed up in a short time and achieve climbing;

While for lead acid batteries, although its power density and energy density is relatively low and its recharging rate is slow, its low price result in its extensive application on low-speed and short distance electric vehicles.

The World is Entering “Aluminum” Battery Era

Recently, ChineseAmerican scientist Dai Hongjie has developed a high- performance aluminum battery which is suitable for commercial applications. Smartphones with such kind of batteries can be fully charged within 1 minute and without capacity loss within 7500 chargedischarge cycles. On the strength of its faster charging, longer service life, and lower cost, it is very possible for aluminum batteries to replace Lithium-ion batteries and alkaline batteries in the future.
    In the past decades, researchers are always trying to develop economical aluminum batteries, but appropriate positive materials and electrolyte materials are too difficult to find.
    In accordance with the report from American’s Science Daily website on April 6, negative electrode (aluminum material), positive electrode (graphite), and electrolyte (ionic liquid) of aluminum battery are placed in a soft bag made of aluminum foil and covered by flexible macromolecules.

     “This newly developed rechargeable aluminum battery is much safer than traditional Li-ion battery. Li-ion battery has the risk of explosion, while aluminum battery is safe on this aspect. In addition, to fully charge a smartphone with Li-ion battery, several hours are needed, while for smartphone with aluminum battery, one minute is enough.”
    Compared with the service life of other aluminum batteries (approximately 100 charge-discharge cycles) and Li-ion batteries (approximately 1000 charge-discharge cycles), the service life of this new aluminum battery (7500 charge-discharge cycles without capacity loss) is really amazing.
    Another distinguishing characteristic of this new aluminum battery is its flexibility, which enables it to be applied on flexible electronic instruments. Cheaper, safer, greener, and more flexible, this aluminum battery is a perfect alternative for traditional alkaline batteries and li-ion batteries.
    The only deficiency of this new aluminum battery is its voltage, which is only half of traditional li-ion batteries. Dai Hongjie planned to improve its voltage and energy density through improving the performance of positive materials.

Sacred Sun Holds Groundbreaking Ceremony for Its New Lead-Carbon Battery Project

On March 16, 2015, Sacred Sun has held the groundbreaking ceremony for the Phase II Construction of “Move and Expansion Project of New Lead-acid Battery Production” at the Sacred Sun Industrial Park. This project is built for the subsequent manufacturing of Sacred Sun’s new high-energy, environment-friendly and long-life lead carbon batteries (energy storage battery and power battery). Related company leaders, leaders of the contractor, and some employees have participated in the groundbreaking ceremony. Li Shuhua, chairman of Sacred Sun’s Labor Union, has presided over the ceremony.



Sacred Sun’s General Manager Gao Yunkui has descripted the project overview at the ceremony.


This project will be accomplished within 2 years (construction area 26,000 m2).With a total investment of 210 million RMB, the production capacity of the project is expected to reach 2 million kAVh. After the completion of this project, annual production capacity of Sacred Sun will reach 6 million kAVh.
