China sees rise in Pb-A battery imports, but exports storm ahead

    Shanghai Metals Market has reported that China imported 695,200 lead-acid batteries in July, increasing 26.1% compared with June with an increase of 11.7% year on year.
    According to China Custom’s previous report, China has imported 4.29 million lead-acid batteries, fell 6.3% year on year compared with the first half of the year, and then sees rise.
    Compared with imports, exports rise to 19.96 million in July, increases 17.07% month on month and 14.6% year on year, an India-based Scrap Register reported. 
    It is estimated that the production of lead-acid battery in China accounted for 30% of world output.
   The Chinese Ministry of Finance claimed that a 4% consumption tax will be levied on lead-acid batteries from January 1 next year, which will generate greater pressure on domestic manufacturers and therefore lead to a reduction of production.
   Chinese government promised to shut down lead-acid battery factories and secondary lead factories with ‘backward production capacities’ by the end of 2015 in one of its reports.

New trend of battery rack

    With the rapid development of telecommunication, the load of base stations is also increasing gradually, which therefore has higher requirement for the reliability of batteries. Some customers and regional markets show growing demand for single cell batteries with large capacity, and also require the batteries to be easily installed, connected, maintained, and space-saving. 
    Recently, Sacred Sun has received a large amount of orders regarding battery rack design, which demonstrates the new trend of battery rack with following characteristics:
1. Horizontal placement of batteries to achieve multi-layer stacking, easy installation, disassembly and maintenance;
2. Modular combination and installation to save installation space;
3. Whole and systematic design of batteries, connectors, racks and related accessories to make sure the easy installation, transportation, and maintenance of the system;
4. Steel shell is equipped outside the battery to prevent the bulge of battery container, and enhance the safety of the battery operation correspondingly;
5. Two different connectors: copper bars and cables are available to meet customers’ different requirements.

Will sodium-ion battery replace Li-ion battery?

    Not satisfied with changing the appearance of lithium battery, John Goodenough, father of Li-ion battery, has now organized an international team of scientists at the University of Texas, US. Currently, the team has claimed that the mineral eldfellite ( NaFe(SO4)2) could be regarded as a potential cathode for sodium-ion battery. This significant discovery has been published on an online Journal called Eldfellite. The title of the paper is “NaFe(SO4)2: Embedded Cathode for Low-cost Sodium-ion Batteries”.
    Eldfellite (NaFe(SO4)2) is composed of Na+ layers and Fe3+ layers, and is separated at a fixed distance by SO42-polyhedral. 80% of the material’s theoretical maximum specific capacity might be achieved because the fixed spaces allow the diffusion of sodium ions.
    Preetam Singh, a scientist of the research team, said that the problem at present is the size of the sodium ion, because the sodium–sodium interaction is much stronger than Lithium-Lithium interaction. If they simply duplicate li-ion technology by directly replacing lithium with sodium in the chemical structure of cathode and electrolyte, favorable ratio performance will not be achieved.
    Li-ion batteries bring us convenience, such as mobile phones and electric vehicles. However, the limited supply of lithium has caused the high cost of li-ion batteries and 
EVs, and has confined the application of the technology.
    In view of the deficiency of lithium, researchers are trying to solve the problem through replacing lithium with sodium, for sodium-ion battery could also reach 100% discharge rate and is safer than lithium-ion battery on transportation.

Recycling of battery: applying used EV batteries into power grid

    Plug-in electric vehicles(PEVs) show enormous potential in reducing the consumption of fossil fuels and the emission of greenhouse gases. However, its relatively high price, which mainly comes from the battery system, impedes its popularization in market. Some researchers put forward that if the secondary use of EV batteries is achieved, it may offset part of the cost of electric vehicles. Researchers from US NREL play an important role in the identification of "the secondary use of EV battery".
    As PEVs energy storage device, Lithium ion battery is usually the most expensive part of electric vehicles, which still has some environmental pollution problems in the processing of used batteries.
   The secondary use of EV batteries could not only expand the application of electricity, but also promote the extensive application of PEVs. What’s more, their application in energy storage power gird could also supplement the electricity demand of the grid at peak times and help to create a cleaner and more flexible grid.    The world’s first “green” lead-acid battery recycling plant will be situated in America, which is expected to eradicate the polluting reputation of lead smelting. The America-based new company Aqua Metals plans to replace conventional smelting method with a water-based “greener” method based on its AquaRefining technology.
   The 33 patents related to the AquaRefining technology will not be released to the public before they are approved. Based on what we have known, electrowinning will be included in this technology. By adopting this technology, 30% energy will be saved compared with the traditional method, and no toxic waste (molten slag, lead dust or sulfur dioxide) will be generated during the process. What’s more, extendable lead electrolyzing modules will be adopted.
   Steve Clarke, CEO of Aqua Metal, stated that one of the merits of their technology is its much smaller economic scale compared with conventional smelting method. If everything goes well, its plant TRIC located in Nevada will be able to produce 80 tons secondary lead every day, and its super plant at Tesla will be completed at the middle of 2016.
  Aqua Metal has developed cooperative relationships with Wirtz Manufacturing and Battery Systems, which are responsible for manufacturing pulverizing systems and providing waste batteries respectively.
   The company plans to build more plants in America and Europe, and develop cooperative relationships with battery manufacturers and lead manufacturers in those areas and other regions around the world.

Sacred Sun lead carbon batteries’ application in communication base station

    
    Nowadays, the general electric power conditions in China is continuously improving. In many communication base stations with relatively good power conditions, huge resources are wasted for batteries always run under floating charge mode and seldom discharge during their lifetime. Furthermore, big electricity peak valley difference and high electricity price in those areas also lead to higher base station electricity fees.
    In view of this, Sacred Sun has upgraded its backup power system based on the excellent cycle performance of its FCP lead carbon battery. On the premise of ensuring the safe operation of battery packs, the system could also make contributions to peak load shifting under PSOC operation. Specifically speaking, on the one hand, the system could monitor the real-time health status of the battery packs, and enable the operator to carry out preventative maintenance timely and therefore guarantee the reliability of the system; on the other hand, the system could be applied to peak load shifting to relieve the imbalance of power load and achieve low-carbon operation.
